I'm in my fifties. I've been through the changes that come with perimenopause, and I can tell you this: the supplement aisle is confusing. There are hundreds of products, most of them with bold claims on the front and a long list of underdosed ingredients on the back. It took me a long time — and a lot of wasted money — to figure out what actually matters.
This guide is the honest version. I'm not a doctor, and nothing here is medical advice. But I am a wellness.club Founding Partner, and wellness.club was co-founded by Paul Mayberry — a pharmacist who won National Independent Pharmacy of the Year, worked with Dr Hilary Jones, and currently advises the Welsh government on the future of community healthcare. In other words, someone who actually knows what goes into a supplement and why it matters. That's why I trusted this brand before it even launched.
Here's what I've learned about the best supplements for menopause in the UK, and what I now take every day.
What menopause and perimenopause actually do to your body
Before we talk about supplements, it's worth understanding why so many women feel like they've been hit by a bus in their forties and fifties. Perimenopause — the years leading up to menopause — can start as early as 35, though most women notice it in their mid-to-late forties. The shift in oestrogen and progesterone affects almost every system in the body:
- Sleep — harder to fall asleep, harder to stay asleep, more vivid dreams
- Mood — anxiety, low mood, irritability that feels out of character
- Energy — fatigue that a good night's sleep doesn't fix
- Weight — harder to maintain, especially around the middle
- Skin and hair — drier, less elastic, more prone to thinning
- Bones — oestrogen protects bone density; as it falls, bone loss accelerates
No single supplement addresses all of this. But the right combination of nutrients — at the right doses — can support your body through the transition in ways that make a real difference to how you feel day to day.
Ingredients worth looking for in menopause supplements
These are the ingredients that have the most evidence behind them. When you're reading a label, these are the names you want to see — and ideally, at meaningful doses rather than token amounts.
Magnesium
Supports sleep quality, muscle relaxation and mood regulation. Magnesium levels often drop during perimenopause. Look for magnesium glycinate or citrate — these absorb better than oxide.
Vitamin D3
Supports bone density, immune function and mood. Most UK women are deficient, especially outside summer. D3 (cholecalciferol) absorbs better than D2. Pair with K2 for best bone effect.
B Vitamins (B6, B12, Folate)
Support energy metabolism, nervous system function and mood. B vitamins work together — a complex is usually better than individual B vitamins.
Ashwagandha
An adaptogen that helps the body manage cortisol (the stress hormone). Cortisol rises when oestrogen falls — ashwagandha can help take the edge off that response.
Collagen Peptides
Oestrogen helps maintain collagen production — as it falls, skin and joint support becomes more important. Hydrolysed collagen peptides absorb well and support skin hydration and elasticity.
Zinc
Supports immune function, skin health and hormonal balance. Often underdosed in generic supplements — look for at least 10mg per daily serving.
The wellness.club midlife range — what's in it and why
The wellness.club midlife range was formulated specifically for women navigating hormonal transition — not adapted from a generic women's formula, but built from the ground up for this life stage. As a Founding Partner, I was involved before these products were available to the public, which means I know exactly what went into the formulation decisions — and why.
The range includes three products designed to work together:
Balance — Rest & Restore
Designed to support calm, resilience and natural energy during hormonal change. Formulated to address sleep quality and the low-level anxiety that often accompanies hormonal fluctuation. It supports mood and stress response without sedating you.
Calm — Restore & Balance
Supports relaxation and recovery during busy or stressful periods. Where Balance supports your baseline day-to-day, Calm is formulated for those moments when you need to properly wind down and recover.
Radiance — More Than Collagen
Originally positioned as a weight loss support product (it's brilliant for that too — more on that in another guide), Radiance also appears in the midlife range because the collagen and skin support it provides is directly relevant to what happens to your skin during and after menopause. Skin hydration, firmness, and a healthy glow — formulated specifically for the hormonal changes that affect collagen production.

A few things I'd watch out for — based on my own experience and what I've learned from working with a pharmacist-led brand:
- Token doses. A supplement that contains 50mg of magnesium in a serving when the effective dose is 300–400mg is not going to do much. Read the label, not just the front of the box.
- Too many ingredients. A product with 25 ingredients in one capsule almost certainly has most of them at doses too small to matter. Focused formulations with fewer, better-dosed ingredients tend to outperform kitchen-sink blends.
- No manufacturing information. Look for products that are made in the UK to pharmaceutical standards or carry GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) certification.
- Miracle claims. No supplement cures menopause. Any brand making dramatic clinical claims on the front of the pack should be viewed with scepticism.
Should you take menopause supplements alongside HRT?
Many women do, and nutritional supplements can complement HRT well — particularly for bone support, skin health and energy. However, always tell your GP or prescribing doctor what supplements you're taking. Some botanical ingredients can interact with medications, and your doctor should have the full picture.
If you're not on HRT and wondering whether supplements are enough — that's genuinely a conversation for your GP. Supplements support your body nutritionally; HRT addresses hormonal levels directly. Many women benefit from both.

Frequently Asked Questions
What supplements actually help with menopause symptoms?
The supplements with the most evidence include magnesium (sleep and mood), vitamin D3 (bone health and mood), B vitamins (energy and nervous system), and adaptogens like ashwagandha (stress response). Look for products formulated specifically for the midlife transition rather than generic women's multivitamins.
Are menopause supplements safe?
Most supplements containing vitamins, minerals and well-studied botanicals are safe for most women. If you are on medication or have an existing health condition, check with your GP or pharmacist first. Products formulated by qualified pharmacists — like the wellness.club midlife range — use ingredients at evidence-informed levels.
Can I take menopause supplements alongside HRT?
Many women do. Always tell your prescribing doctor what supplements you're taking, as some botanical ingredients can interact with medications. Your GP or pharmacist can advise on your specific situation.
How long before menopause supplements start working?
Most women notice a difference within 4 to 8 weeks of consistent daily use. Some benefits — particularly bone and skin support — take longer. Supplements need to be taken daily to have an effect; occasional use won't deliver results.
